Build a Drone from Scratch using Tinkercad

How to Design a Drone with Tinkercad

Have you ever wanted to design your own drone? Whether you are a beginner or a hobbyist, you can use Tinkercad to create 3D models of drones easily and quickly. Tinkercad is a free online tool that lets you create and edit 3D objects using simple shapes and drag-and-drop functionality. You can also export your models for 3D printing or rendering, or share them with other users on the Tinkercad gallery or on social media.

In this article, we will show you how to design a drone with Tinkercad in four easy steps:

  • What you need to get started

  • How to create a basic drone shape

  • How to add details and features to your drone

  • How to export and share your drone model

What You Need to Get Started

To use Tinkercad, you will need the following:

  • A computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux)

  • A web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge)

  • An internet connection

  • A free account on

To create an account, you just need to enter your email address and a password. You can also sign up with your Google or Facebook account.

How to Create a Basic Drone Shape

Once you have logged in to Tinkercad, you will see a dashboard where you can create new projects or access existing ones. To start a new project, click on the "Create new design" button.

You will be taken to the editor where you can see a grid-like workplane and a toolbar with various shapes and tools. To create a basic drone shape, follow these steps:

  • Drag a cube from the toolbar onto the workplane. This will be the body of your drone.

  • Adjust the size and position of the cube by dragging its corners or edges. You can also use the arrows on the cube to move it along the x-, y-, or z-axis.

  • Drag four cylinders from the toolbar onto the workplane. These will be the arms of your drone.

  • Adjust the size and position of the cylinders by dragging their corners or edges. You can also use the arrows on the cylinders to move them along the x-, y-, or z-axis.

  • Align the cylinders with the cube so that they form a cross shape. You can use the align tool from the toolbar to snap them together.

  • Select all five shapes by clicking and dragging over them or by holding down the Shift key and clicking on each one.

  • Click on the group tool from the toolbar to combine them into one shape.

You have now created a basic drone shape. It should look like this:

How to Add Details and Features to Your Drone

Now that you have created a basic drone shape, you can add more details and features to make it look more realistic and functional. For example, you can add propellers, landing gear, camera, etc. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Drag four cones from the toolbar onto the workplane. These will be the propellers of your drone.

  • Adjust the size and position of the cones by dragging their corners or edges. You can also use the arrows on the cones to move them along the x-, y-, or z-axis.

  • Rotate the cones by 90 degrees so that they point upwards. You can use the rotate tool from the toolbar to do this.

  • Place the cones on top of the cylinders so that they are centered. You can use the align tool from the toolbar to snap them together.

  • Select all four cones and click on the group tool from the toolbar to combine them into one shape.

  • Drag a sphere from the toolbar onto the workplane. This will be the camera of your drone.

  • Adjust the size and position of the sphere by dragging its corners or edges. You can also use the arrows on the sphere to move it along the x-, y-, or z-axis.

  • Place the sphere on the front of the cube so that it is slightly protruding. You can use the align tool from the toolbar to snap it together.

  • Select all six shapes (the cube, the cylinders, and the cones) and click on the hole tool from the toolbar to make them transparent.

  • Select all seven shapes (the cube, the cylinders, the cones, and the sphere) and click on the group tool from the toolbar to combine them into one shape.

You have now added details and features to your drone. It should look like this:

How to Export and Share Your Drone Model

Once you are happy with your drone model, you can export it as an STL file for 3D printing or as an OBJ file for rendering. You can also share it on the Tinkercad gallery or on social media. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Click on the export button from the toolbar. A pop-up window will appear with various options.

  • Select STL if you want to export your model for 3D printing or OBJ if you want to export it for rendering. You can also choose other formats such as SVG or GLTF.

  • Click on download and save your file to your computer.

  • To share your model on the Tinkercad gallery, click on the share button from the toolbar. A pop-up window will appear with a link to your model and options to edit its name, description, tags, etc.

  • Click on save and publish to make your model public on the gallery. You can also choose to keep it private or unlisted.

  • To share your model on social media, click on the share button from the toolbar and then click on one of the icons for Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Email. A pop-up window will appear with a link to your model and options to customize your message.

  • Click on share to post your model on your chosen platform.

You have now exported and shared your drone model. You can also view other users' models on the Tinkercad gallery or search for them by keywords or tags.
